Down & Dirty by Ellen Zachos (a gardening book!)

Down and Dirty by Ellen Zachos

With gardening season just around the corner, this wonderful book by talented author and gardener: Ellen Zachos, came to mind today.

I am definitely a novice gardener, but I   the idea of being a lot more skilled at this oh so popular hobby.

Yes, I've had my patches of potatoes, the occasional perfect tomato, some pretty flower beds... over the years.  But as for a true "green thumb" mine definitely ain't!!

This particular gardening book appealed to me so much. Not just because it is so visually beautiful but mainly due to it giving the "gardening challenged" like me, the hope of actually creating a beautiful and unique garden. All of the numerous garden theme projects in this book provide a welcome creative challenge; but most of all, look like lots of fun too.

You can read my full book review here that I wrote a few years ago.

No matter what kind of gardener you are, novice, expert or somewhere in between, I think you will   this book!!!

PS: I noted this collage in my photo archives when I was putting together this post. One that I created a few years ago. Thought it went well with the theme of this post too.

Spring flowers can't be too far away,  now that we are on Vancouver Island.  The spring season comes even earlier here, compared to other parts of BC. ;-)

  10. That might be a book I could use, since our climate here isn't so very different from Vancouver Island, we have milder winters.

  11. I didn't realize you were on Vancouver Island - How wonderful!! Being in the mountains now I only garden in pots and it's mostly flowers. I miss having an acre and the motivation to play in the yard and garden. I do rake up pine needles a lot so that keeps me somewhat fit besides walking. Loved your review and I'll take a look at your longer review. I do get excited here when I see the first daffodils pop up all over town and then tulips and oh when the dogwoods bloom it's heavenly. Enjoy life on the Island - must be wonderful!

    1. We already have some daffodils too! It's an amazing site in January, for someone like me who grew up on the COLD Prairies on Canada. I love the tulips too and crocuses of course.

Container gardening can be pretty cool too. I've seen some amazing ideas in this regard. I like your comment about the raking to keep fit. I'm all for incorporating fitness with chores. Who needs a StairMaster LOL!!!

Thanks for your good wishes too Sandy.

    2. It is good exercise for sure - especially the arms. We get a lot of pine needles and it's a "law" up here in the mountains, they all have to be raked up by April or the owner gets a fine. Our daffodils - oh they are gorgeous up the mountain where a man planted a daffodil grove for his wife who was being treated for breast cancer. She passed away and he kept planting more and more until it's quite a sight to see when it's all in bloom. I can imagine how different Vancouver island must feel. I love Seattle (my son lives about 30 minutes or so in Olalla and one of the times I visit I want to get over to Vancouver.

    3. The daffodils sound heavenly Sandy, what a nice story. Washington state is so beautiful too. I'm sure your son is happy when you visit.😂

  12. When I had my house I was getting really good I planted wild flowers, and my very own white Lilac tree. I hope he didn't take them down, I wish I could plant some things on my balcony but there is a nest of wasp right to my left, and although I've asked over and over again for them to hire someone, they never do...So I'll seek the beautiful planting through my blogger friends, back on PhotographL don't really want to sell anything :) I'll have to live through your garden and planting experience, better than nothing, right? :)

    1. right now, I'm not sure when I'll have a real garden again either, but I sure enjoy seeing other gardens and online at my fav blogs and sites too. wasps are sooooo scary, it's a good idea to stay well clear of them. I hear that their bites hurt something wicked!!!

I don't know how to comment at your blog now L, doesn't seem to have that option anymore, but I do appreciate your visits here. :-)

      Hugs to you, G
