Your Advice Please :-) RE: Organizing Photos

With a move pending later this summer, I'm currently in "organize mode" in more ways than one; including cleaning our 1000s of emails and  also trying to find a better way to (once again) organize my many, many photos

I find the MS/Windows option with folders and TRYING to pull photos into the correct folder on the sidebar, most annoying.

All too often, they land in the folder above or below.  Can you relate? :-(

I'd love to find a free (or cheap) photo organizing program, to put an end to my photo mess, once and for all. Something that is easy to use and helpful, not just another chore to contend with.

Any suggestions would be MOST appreciated!

I need to get this photo pile tidied up and soon. Thanks if you can help.

Have a wonderful weekend and week to come! :-)

  1. Wish I could help you, Geraldine...but my photos are no where near being organized!
Hope that someone comes through for you.
Moving can be frustrating...and a great adventure, too.
    Best Wishes...

    1. Thanks for trying Jan but I can so relate to photos not being organized. I DID have them all tidied up about a year ago, had organized and also deleted lots, but again, it's a big mess now.

Moving this time is going to be soooo exciting, a big dream coming true for me too. I'll share more when it's a done deal.

Best wishes and happy weekend to you, G

  2. I can't help either. I'm a very organised person so I 'tidy up' as I go along. As for emails, I don't keep them too long. Once read once (or maybe twice) they are ready for the off. Unless, of course, they are important. If that's the case I transfer them ASAP to a folder on the computer or print them off. Copy and paste is wonderful and so useful.

    1. I LOVE being tidy and organized, in most ways Val, but it seems when it comes to photos, I fall behind. I think with an easy to use organizational tool for photos, I could get better though.

Sounds like you've got things very organized in your life Val, that's great! :-) Love it.

  3. You are a very organized person but with all the photos you have, it's hard to keep them tidy and organized. I hope you find the right program that makes this easy for you.

  4. I keep my photos in a couple of place. On my computer, I use Aperture, and it works great. I have categories for everything. Have you looked at Flickr? When I used Word Press stored my post photos there. Now, I put all the ones I want to keep (full sized) on my site.

    1. I'm going to check out Aperture Sandy, thanks for the recommend. I have a Flickr account but it's not what I have in mind for all my photos.

  6. Hi Geraldine!
Ha, I am OK with my emails - I just sort them each time I check them...but my photos...well, I must be one of the most unorganised people around!! I can never find the one I'm looking for, have to sift through the entire collection...so often have to give up and not use the photo! :/
    Such a pain!!
Good to know I'm not the only one though...;)

Very best of luck with your upcoming move...here's hoping you will be really happy in your new home! :))

    1. I've got the emails almost finished but the photos...well they are still a mess. Glad it's not just me!!!

I thank you for your kind words re: my upcoming move. It is SO exciting after so many delays to almost be ready to go. Something REALLY good is worth waiting for, isn't it? ;-)

      Hugs back to you, G

  7. PS: After checking out and testing numerous photo organizing options, in the past couple of days, I think I'll be using Shutterfly. It is Window's friendly and I like how easy it is to move photos from my PC photo files, directly to their site, with a drag and drop option. Seems to be everything I need there so time will tell. And it's free!

Have a great rest of the week and weekend, G

    1. That doesn't sound good at all Debbie, why would that be? I'm not happy with Windows either but after trying Shutterfly and realizing it's limitations, I guess I'm back to the MS photo files. Rats!!!!

  9. oH..a move - so that means you are moving from where you are now?
I store my photos both on my hard drive and I send them into Picasa when loading them into the computer which puts there there and also on my hard drive at the same time. Then I upload them to Google web albums ( like a cloud storage). If I name them right -each folder it's not too hard to find.

    1. I actually have a Picasa acct. Sandy but I've never used it much. Sounds like you've got things well in hand with photos, well done! I'm in the majority with my photo "mess" from what I've been reading at various sites. But I WILL get it organized and soon. I sure made headway on my emails in the past week, tossed 1000s of those! ;-)

    2. PS: Yes we are moving from where we are now. I'll post about all this when it's a done deal. Suffice to say, where we are moving is a dream destination for me and a LONG time coming. :-)

  10. Hi Geraldine, I keep my photos several places, but first I ruthlessly delete ones I know I won't use. I use a system of albums and folders to organize them by year and event. I keep some in Lightroom and iPhoto, but I also use Flickr and Shutterfly which I see you're considering. I like Shutterfly because I've made cards and books from that site, and I've been pleased. Also, they give me freebies once and awhile. I also store my photos on a separate hard drive in case I have computer failure. Google Drive is another free storage option. I take thousands of photos, so deleting ones I don't want and organizing them frequently is necessary.

    1. Oh, well done with being so organized Barb, I'm impressed!

Yes, I did try Shutterfly and like the option of making things and ordering from their sites, with my photos. Also the drag and drop to folders was great too. What I didn't like was not being able to move photos around, within a folder. To me, that should have been a given. Also, I wasn't sure how I would upload photos to my blog when needed, from there. I thought it would still mean using my MS photo files for that.

  11. I need a better photo organisation system and i need to learn to be more like Barb and 'ruthlessly delete' more of my photos

    1. I agree Juliet, Barb has inspired me to do better with this. I think I'll aim for a weekly photo tidy up when I get it sorted this time.
